The Pear, You and AI is a women-led collaborative annotation initiative, designed as part of a larger project on Algorithmic Art to Counter Gender Bias in AI. In this initial phase, we are undergoing data collection based on your words and perceptions associated with words like women, beauty, imperfection. In a second phase, we will use these data to create digital art, along with an interactive, immersive art installation. Your words will help inspire and create art projects, inform research that improves both AI design practices and digital literacy, and engage citizens on critical issues of digital democracies. By supporting this initiative, you are contributing to a process that facilitates inclusive and equitable Digital Futures.

This project started when Valentine Goddard, AI ethics and human rights advocate, asked an AI-based image-generator to show her what the words women, beauty and imperfection looked like. Since the output of the system was a “pear”, she decided to research the reasons underlying that result, and use algorithmic art to counter gender bias encountered in AI.
